I have been looking forward to this day since I was pregnant lol! I’ve been so excited to be able to make Carter homemade baby food.
A few weeks ago at his monthly visit our Dr. recommended we start feeding him vegetable purees since he still isn’t gaining enough weight (along with breastfeeding of course, I have no plans giving that up). I was hoping to wait until he was at least 6 months but the Dr. said it wasn’t a problem starting a month early. We went and bought the baby bullet steamer that evening! You could steam without the baby bullet steamer but I’m a sucker for cute baby products! I mean just look at this thing!
I decided his first food would be carrots. They were so easy! I just cut them up into “baby carrots” sized pieces and threw them on the steamer for the recommended time (13 minutes). After they cooled I put them in my blender with some breast milk. You can also use formula or water. I always boil my water first if that’s what I’m using to mix with. You can add more/less depending on your desired consistency.
I learned on Pinterest about pouring the puree into an ice cube tray and freezing for convenience. You just pop out a couple and microwave! It’s so easy!
Carter didn’t seem to really love or hate the carrots. Just indifferent. But a few days later when I made him Avocado…well that was pure love! He just wanted more and more! I made sure to try the same food for a few days before introducing a new type in case of any allergies.
Tonight I made him some sweet potato and some squash. The squash ended up being a bit more like squash soup, I put in a bit too much milk. I didn’t steam the squash because I wasn’t really sure how to do it so I just cut it in half, threw it in the oven for 30 minutes (rotating the tray halfway through) and blended once cooled.
We’re having tons of fun trying all these new veggies, I can’t wait to start mixing and coming up with some recipes!
Feel free to leave me some tips, comments, or recipes. We would love some ideas!
